Salmon River Trail #742

The Salmon River Trail (SRT) #742 from the Salmon River Trailhead to Jackpot Meadows Trailhead is a 14 mile hike each way for a total of 28 miles near Welches in the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness. I was having a difficult time finding information online for anything past Linney Creek Trail, so I decided to backpack the trail in its entirety and document it myself. I am hopeful it will prove useful for other backpackers looking to hike the beautiful SRT beyond the eighth mile.

One thing that always causes anxiety for me when I’m going on a backpacking trip is where I am going to sleep. Of course you can usually find a flat enough spot off the trail somewhere, but sometimes you can’t. Sometimes you are hiking on ridges for what seems like hours or you aren’t close to any water! I like to know where I am and what to expect. And what I always like to know is where the established camping sites are. Some would argue that it is better to find a non-established site and leave it the way you found it. But always follow the guidelines from the Ranger Station near you of camping best practices.

We were asked by nearly everyone we crossed on the trail about how far it went and where there were camping spots. I hope my documentation is helpful. My next post will include a detailed explanation of the trail along with a map of the full SRT and inform you of what and where you can expect on the trail along with photos of our adventure!
